Rebecca Surian began her professional career in development at Michigan State University in 1990, following graduation from MSU’s College of Arts & Letters, with a Bachelor’s Degree in French.  In April 2006, with the transition of the School of Music moving to College status, Rebecca took the Director of Development position in the College of Music, starting up advancement efforts for MSU’s 16th college. Under her leadership, and working closely with the dean and faculty, private funding has increased significantly in support of the musical arts, and advancement efforts for the College were strengthened through the establishment of the College of Music Alumni Board and the College of Music National Leadership Council - volunteer groups serving the needs of Music alumni, faculty, students, donors and patrons.

In October 2007, MSU realized the successful completion of The Campaign of MSU, having raised more than $1.4 billion.  The College of Music exceeded its campaign goal of $11.2 million raising $16.3 million in private giving, with more than $9.55 million directed to endowment. During the course of the campaign, the College of Music established 53 new endowment funds, going from 27 endowments with a market value of $3.74 million pre-campaign to 86 endowments with a market value of $13.43 million. Of the 53 new endowments, 41 were established in support of student scholarships and fellowships with a market value of $6.12 million; 3 named funds were established in support of endowed faculty chairs with a market value of $2.05 million; 3 programmatic endowments were created with a market value of $233,000; and 6 area discretionary endowments were established with a market value of $1.13 million. Of the 53 new endowments established, 27 were funded through planned gift commitments: 1 faculty endowment at $1.5 million; 21 student endowments at $4.4 million; 2 programmatic endowments at $231,500; and 3 area discretionary endowments at $776,700. Pre-campaign, the College of Music received 10 six-figure and one seven-figure gift commitments, and during the course of the campaign, the college received 20 six-figure and four seven-figure gift commitments. Two of these four seven-figure gift commitments came from College of Music faculty.

Surian began her professional career at Michigan State University in January 1991, working for eleven years in MSU’s central development office, overseeing the Annual Giving Telemarketing Program and the Special Giving Societies Office (donors at the $10,000 - $100,000 giving levels). She took the Director of Development position for the College of Arts & Letters in June of 2001, overseeing the development and alumni relations activities for the School of Music, Languages, and Humanities within the college, including the Art Museum and Spartan Marching Band.

“It is a privilege working with the many MSU alumni and friends who are such passionate supporters of the musical arts,” said Surian. “What a pleasure it is to work with donors to the College of Music and see the joy they get when their contributions benefit our exceptionally talented faculty and students.”
