Jazz Bassist Ben Williams ('07) Wins Thelonious Monk Competition
Congratulations to Ben Williams, Music Education major MSU ’07, and student of Rodney Whitaker, who won First Place in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition in Washington D.C. last week. Ben was awarded a $20,000 cash prize and a recording contract with Concord Records group.
The Washington Post article announcing the prize states:“Since its founding in 1987, the annual contest, sponsored by the Washington-based Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, has become the most prestigious competition in the world for aspiring jazz musicians. Focusing on a different instrument each year, it has become the equivalent of the Van Cliburn and Tchaikovsky competitions in classical music. Past winners and finalists, such as Joshua Redman, Jane Monheit and Eric Alexander, have become the new stars of jazz.”
